The National Park Service reported additional Blue Ridge Parkway road and campground reopenings in an October 5, 2026, announcement. The update is useful for fall trip planning, but it describes a dated recovery milestone rather than guaranteeing the condition of the route on your departure day. Read the official announcement.
What the announcement says
NPS said travelers could drive continuously from James River at milepost 63.7 in Virginia to Little Switzerland near milepost 344 in North Carolina. It also reported the reopening of loops B and D at Julian Price Campground and identified campground reservations through October 30. The release described remaining Hurricane Helene repair work elsewhere on the Parkway.
These are the agency’s reported milestones. They do not establish that every campground site is suitable for a particular rig, that every service is operating, or that no new restriction has appeared since the announcement. Use the park’s current information when deciding the actual route.
What to check before changing a booking
Start with the section of Parkway you need, the entrances and exits you intend to use, and the dimensions of the vehicle. Then check the campground and individual site separately. A reopened road segment and a suitable overnight space answer different questions. Keep those questions distinct when contacting park staff or a campground operator.
If the update makes a different overnight base attractive, inspect the new reservation terms before canceling an existing stay. Compare the resulting mileage, access, and services. A shorter line on the map is not automatically a better drive for the vehicle or the people traveling.
Keep the date attached to the information
Save the current park guidance with your trip notes and refresh it close to departure. Avoid passing along an old screenshot as a live road-status report. This magazine has not conducted a road inspection and does not provide RV-safe navigation certification.
For practical preparation, use our campsite-fit guide and trip-budget framework. The useful response to reopening news is a fresh planning check: the route you need, the actual campsite, the current services, and a workable alternative if conditions change.
Retain a suitable overnight alternative in the same planning area.
