Death Valley National Park announced on October 5, 2026, that more than half of Saline Valley Warm Springs Campground had reopened after a fire. The immediate fire area remained closed because of hot spots and hazardous materials. The announcement is a dated park update, not a statement that every access road or campsite is currently suitable for an RV. Official park release.

The scope of the reopening

NPS identified reopened areas including Palm Spring and the camping area between Lower Spring and Palm Spring. It said investigators determined that a propane grill accidentally ignited a palm tree. The park also warned visitors against entering the closed burn area or attempting to repair damaged infrastructure.

The release described continuing assessment and recovery work. A partial reopening should therefore be read literally: it does not mean all facilities or affected areas have returned to normal. Follow posted closures and current park instructions rather than using the announcement as permission to enter an area under recovery.

What the news means for a road trip

Before making Saline Valley part of a route, investigate the current access requirements, official conditions, and the suitability of the actual vehicle. Do not infer an ordinary paved campground approach from the word “campground.” If a critical route or equipment question remains unresolved, select another overnight plan.

For any destination affected by fire or other damage, keep the overnight decision separate from the desire to see the place. Determine where camping is permitted, which services you need, and how the trip changes if the preferred area is unavailable. Save current information and suitable alternatives before leaving a reliable connection.

Use the release responsibly

When sharing the news, retain the announcement date and the partial-reopening qualification. An undated headline can lose the distinction between an agency’s recovery milestone and the current state of a destination. This magazine has not inspected the campground or certified the route for any vehicle.

Our campsite planning checklist helps organize the questions, while the departure routine guide keeps trip preparation tied to the actual equipment. The relevant next step is to consult the park’s present guidance, respect recovery closures, and choose a plan supported by current information.
